Breaking myths: be a Feng Shui advisor

Most who are intrigued by the title of this article probably know the term Feng Shui. You are probably assuming that this is a skill that has its roots in the East and that it all has something to do with interiors. However, how many of you would be able to tell an approximately exact definition or explain to someone who is not at all versed in the story what this is all about? Admittedly, we ourselves were among those to whom the term was only relatively familiar, but we knew we wanted to know more. We asked Tina Sablić, the founder and owner of a Feng Shui consulting company , who has a degree from the New York Institute of Art + Design and a member of the International Feng Shui Association in Singapore, whose only member is from Croatia.

When asked to most simply describe what Feng Shui is, Tina had a ready answer: Feng Shui is an ancient discipline that raises awareness of how much our environment affects us. Feng Shui provides tools and methods to change the environment in order to achieve certain results and increase overall well-being, satisfaction and success. It allows us to reconnect with nature, bringing its energy into space. As our harmony with the environment grows, so does our awareness and satisfaction. Since our immediate environment has a physical and psychological impact on us, Feng Shui provides us with new ways of understanding and implementing change. You can read below about what exactly her job looks like and what are the most common prejudices she encounters!

WHAT IS THE PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF YOUR BUSINESS?

When we talk about the public perception of my work in Croatia, the first reaction I would mention is a surprise. People will be surprised that anyone is doing this business in our area at all, and especially that they are running a successful business.

Through conversation I see that people want to know more about it because they are not very familiar with the complexity of the content. People think it’s just moving furniture, painting walls and placing figures, but Feng Shui is much more than that. Nevertheless, I am glad to receive positive feedback and the growing interest in Feng Shui consulting and interior design services according to Feng Shui principles.

WHAT DOES YOUR JOB REALLY LOOK LIKE?

What I do on a daily basis are talking to clients, gathering and reviewing the necessary information, various business meetings and video calls. Also, new ones are contracted and the progress of existing projects is monitored. Going to the field is also part of my job. My team in charge of replying to emails, maintaining profiles on social media, and making schedules makes the job a lot easier. When I’m not in the office, working with clients continues in furniture salons and choosing home decorations.

3 BEST THINGS IN YOUR BUSINESS?

The first best thing about my job is the uniqueness of each project. Since I work with people every life story is different, every space is a story unto itself and that is what motivates me and gets the most out of me. As a complement to the uniqueness of the project, the second best thing is the trust of the clients. I am very glad when someone chooses me as their Feng Shui advisor, when people open up with their stories and goals. By opening the doors of their home they give me the freedom to use my knowledge and certain tools to give guidelines that lead to their personal progress. The third best thing I would list is travel and membership in exclusive communities around the world. All of this, as well as my Instagram profile, contributed to the promotion of Feng Shui lifestyle and interior design.

3 HARDEST THINGS IN YOUR JOB?

The hardest thing in business is deadlines. At the same time the most important. We are extremely careful to respect the agreed deadlines, ie to respect our own and the client’s time. Sometimes it is challenging to coordinate several different factors to complete a project, but most often it acts motivating. The second hardest thing is getting involved in running multiple companies at once. This means that I need to make quick business decisions, make conference calls with associates and clients, most often in different time zones. The last item would be everyday challenges, which appear quickly but are also solved quickly. It’s all part of business and personal progress.

HOW DID YOUR DEVELOPMENT PATH GO?

Feng Shui principles and home decoration have always interested me at a basic level. When I decided one day that this was what I wanted to do, my first goal was to find a quality education recognized globally. As a result, I successfully enrolled and graduated from the New York Institute of Art + Design. After completing his schooling, he applied and accepted to the International Feng Shui Association, Singapore and the Union of Excellence, Monaco. In both organizations I am the first and currently the only member from Croatia.

IF YOU DIDN’T DO THIS JOB, WHICH CAREER WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Considering that I am a marine management engineer by profession, that I have a black belt, that I am a taekwondo champion of Croatia and I work or live my purpose as a Feng Shui consultant, it is quite difficult for me to answer this question. I find it never too late to live your dreams as well as change professions.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO DO THIS BUSINESS?

The job of a Feng Shui consultant is quite unique. As vague and even strange as it may seem to other people, if you have a clear vision and faith in yourself, success will come. Keep your focus on the goal and don’t change your authenticity for someone’s approval.

WHAT QUALITIES A PERSON WHO WANTS TO SUCCEED IN YOUR INDUSTRY MUST HAVE?

I think every level of business requires certain qualities and knowledge. A Feng Shui counselor should primarily be a self-aware person, a person of calm energy and one who is able to recognize the needs of the client. It is very important to know how to communicate with clients and business associates. Also, the organization of time is a very important feature. If a person wants to raise their knowledge and skills to a higher level, then it is necessary to surround yourself with the right team of people and show certain managerial skills.

THE WORST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?

When I went public with my Instagram profile, there were "concerned" questions about how people in Croatia would react to Feng Shui, whether there would be those who would hire me and how Croatia is not a market for that, but over 8000 followers on Instagram and excellent engagement and feedback from people showed the opposite. Everything other people care about and say can’t be done, mostly speaks to their own abilities and fears

THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?

Don’t be afraid to be different. Be afraid of being like everyone else!
